Meet the Musicians #13
Meet Isaac Davis, recently graduated from prestigious ANAM, and moved to Perth to take up a contract as an acting principal Cello with West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Q. What’s your favorite thing about being part of a string quartet?
A. My favourite part of being in a string quartet is the intimacy within the ensemble and the opportunity to both offer and receive musical expression in real time. It is always a joy to hear what my colleagues express, and I enjoy communicating back to them.
Q. What’s the most cgallenging aspect of playing in a string quartet, and how do you overcome it?
A. Tuning. As a cellist, we need to be particularly observant of the pitch of our lower strings/bass notes against the violins in the higher register. Since there is no one foolproof method to ensure accuracy, we take precautions such as tuning our lower strings higher than usual. We must always be aware of the harmony and our function within it, adjusting accordingly whenever required.
Q. Can you share a behind-scenes peek into the preparation process for our upcoming concert?
A. Preparation so far has been excellent. We are making great progress with Beethoven, and have been finding our ‘quartet sound’ more and more each rehearsal. The Wolf, being a notoriously difficult work, is on more of a slow burner. But we believe this method will provide us with a rock-solid foundation, so that we can deliver this work to our audiences in its full glory.
Q. If you weren’t a musician, what career do you think you would have pursued?
A. In year 12, I was stuck deciding between music performance and actuarial studies. I was always interested in mathematics, but eventually music took a hold of me that was too strong to ignore.
Q. What do you most recommend from the program of our upcoming concert?
A. The Beethoven Quartet Op.18 No.4 in C minor is an absolute classic, electrifying and full of both wit and drama. We are very excited to be presenting this work, and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
