Meet the Musicians #8

Q & A with our principal double bass, Josh Spirek

Q. Can you share your overall experience from the previous summer camps?

A. My past 2 summer camps have been some of the most rewarding concerts I’ve ever been able to be part of.

Q. What aspects of the camp did you find most valuable or enjoyable?

A. I found that the selection of repertoire coupled with other friendly musicians involved in the project to be very enjoyable. The atmosphere during rehearsals in one that balances both focus and determination, as well as enjoyment and fun.

Q. Did you feel that the camp contributed to your musical growth and skill development? If so, were there spesific areas of improvement that you noticed in your playing?

A. Definitely! Being able to sit beside such high level musicians both in the section and out, helped to push me to further better myself. This helped to build my self confidence and my overall section playing, by focusing on blending and contributing to a good section sound.

Q. What were your favorite pieces or performances from previous years?

A. My favorite piece that I’ve previously performed with Cygnus Arioso has to be Grieg’s String Quartet arranged for string orchestra. The balance between the difficulty of the music as well as how fun the piece was to play, made the experience feel even more rewarding.

Q. How would you describe the quality of instruction and coaching you received?

A. Amazing! The quality of coaching from Akiko is a true testament to who she is and what she’s strived for, for this ensemble. Running an ensemble myself, I understand how difficult this is and admire her greatly for it!

Q. Would you recommend this summer camp to other aspiring musicians?

A. Definitely!
