Why I continue the Summer Camp Project
I launched the Summer Camp project during the height of COVID-19, a time when borders—both international and domestic—were closed. It feels like a distant memory now, but the university-aged generation at that time faced significant challenges. Opportunities for travel, attending camps, and participating in masterclasses were repeatedly taken away. Life in Perth allowed us to live almost as we had before COVID, but for young people, losing the chance to explore new worlds, immerse themselves in higher-level environments, and challenge themselves to grow was devastating.
Witnessing this situation, I felt a strong desire to create an experience that could be a positive, memorable, and life-enriching moment, even while confined to Perth. That desire gave birth to this project.
Now, the circumstances of the pandemic feel like a thing of the past, and we can once again freely travel between states and countries. But looking at the broader world today, new challenges emerge.
Ongoing wars, worsening economic conditions, and shifting political landscapes raise the question: how can we, as musicians, navigate and protect ourselves in these times? Historically, the arts are often among the first areas to feel the impact of such disruptions. Cultural activities are frequently perceived as luxuries, tied to wealth and prosperity.
But is that truly the case?
If all joy were stripped from daily life, what might remain? Singing a song or replaying music in one’s mind—these simple acts connect us to our humanity. Music has an intrinsic, essential value; it serves as a foundation of dignity and joy in life.
Because of this profound potential and energy, music captivates the human heart. It is worth nurturing as part of a lifelong journey. Music is a gift, unmatched in its ability to inspire. As professional musicians, our job is to share this gift as widely as possible—to help music become a meaningful part of others’ lives and to celebrate the joy it brings.
At Cygnus Arioso, I believe that beauty is something you cultivate within yourself, and culture is something you create with those around you. I hope this platform allows everyone involved to explore their path as musicians. Playing a single concert may seem like a small act, but I encourage our participants to respect every factor involved. From understanding the state of their performance to considering their role within the ensemble, I want them to reflect deeply and grow from the experience.
This is why I choose challenging repertoire each year. I want participants to experience the fulfillment that comes from investing energy and effort into a singular goal. I believe these experiences lay the foundation for the strength to live life on their terms.
To the younger generation shaping our future: I urge you to channel all your energy and resources into your growth and the creation of your own future. While my contributions may be small, I am committed to doing everything I can to support you.
